New treatments and research into macular degeneration will be taking centre stage this September at the Macular Society’s annual London Conference.

Tickets are now available for the event, which is sponsored by Vision Aid and takes place on Saturday 16 September at the Grange Tower Bridge Hotel in Prescot Street, Central London.

The conference will give people with macular degeneration the chance to find out about the latest developments in treating their condition. They will also be able to hear from researchers on current medical trials.

Cathy Yelf, chief executive of the Macular Society, said: “Events like this are vital in raising awareness of macular conditions and what causes them. They also help us let people know about the support available to them and the crucial research, which we believe will eventually lead us to find a cure.

“Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the UK’s most common cause of sight loss. Around 600,000 people in the UK have AMD with 220 new cases being diagnosed every day. With an ageing population, more and more people are going to be affected as time goes on. At the current rate, we expect 1.3 million people to have AMD by 2050.”

Attendees will hear from a range of leading experts including ophthalmologists, researchers and inspirational speakers. They will also have the opportunity to take part in one of four workshops focusing on mobility, nutrition, lighting and low vision devices and smartphones and tablets.

During the afternoon, the charity will be unveiling the winners of its annual ‘Awards for Excellence’, which celebrate the excellent and inspirational work done to provide services and care for people with macular disease.

The event also includes a low-vision equipment and services exhibition.

Cathy said: “We expect the London Conference to once again prove as popular as it has in previous years. It’s our 30th anniversary this year and we’ve got some fantastic speakers lined up, as well as some great interactive sessions for people to take part in.  There will also be lots of gadgets on show throughout the day, which people can test out for themselves.

“We’d encourage anyone thinking of coming to purchase their ticket as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.”

The event runs from 9.30am-4.15pm and is open to all those affected by macular conditions, their families, carers, friends and anyone interested in finding out more.

Entry to the conference is by ticket only. Tickets are priced at £22 each and are available from the Macular Society website, http://www.macularsociety.org/conference, or by calling 01264 350 551.
