11 Aug 2014 - VISION 2020 UK's Bigger Better Vision competition: Win iPad prizes thanks to VICTA

VISION 2020 UK is running a low vision device design competition for children and young people, ‘Bigger, Better Vision’, supported by Visually Impaired Children Taking Action (VICTA).

An initiative of the VISION 2020 UK Children’s Low Vision Sub Group, ‘Bigger, Better Vision’ encourages young people from across the UK to submit a design, photograph or written description of a creatively modified low vision device. Entrants are encouraged to let loose their imaginations and think creatively about adapting devices (ideally those which are widely available), to make them more attractive to use.

Mary Bairstow, chair of the VISION 2020 UK Children’s Low Vision Sub Group said: “With our Bigger, Better Vision competition, we hope to highlight the lack of low vision equipment that is tailored for children, with devices traditionally aimed at an older generation.

Young people often reject visual aids, because they stand out and make them look different, leading to feelings of social exclusion. Young people want their low vision aids to be designed for them, in the way that many other products are, with choices that reflect their individuality and identity.”

Tracie Tappenden of VICTA commented: “We’re proud to support the work of the VISION 2020 UK Children’s Low Vision Sub Group through the Bigger, Better competition. We hope that this encourages manufacturers to create vision aids that are attractive and appealing to children, and something that they can be proud of.”

Thanks to VICTA, winners in each of the two categories (8 years and under, and 9-16 years), will receive an iPad. Winners will be announced on World Sight Day, 9th October 2014. Entries close 26th September 2014.
