Scotland has made tremendous strides in improving eye care.
The refreshed Scottish Vision Strategy offers a unique opportunity to ensure that all Scots can maintain good eye health, and those with sight loss can receive services centred on their individual needs.
Using its devolved powers, the Scottish Government has:
• Introduced sight screening for all four and five year olds
• Made free eye tests available for all
• Approved new drugs to treat sight loss conditions
• Invested £6.6m in a high-tech digital image system to reduce referral times between opticians and ophthalmology departments.
But there are still many challenges to meet, including an ageing population and a persistently poor health record.
The Scottish Vision Strategy Group
The Scottish Vision Strategy Advisory Group, made up from a cross sector of statutory and voluntary organisations and professional bodies, has refreshed the original Strategy document, taking forward the work into the next phase from 2013 to 2018.
